An Israeli tank brigade has seized control of the Gaza Strip side of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, authorities say, moving forward with an offensive in the southern city even as cease-fire negotiations with Hamas remain on a knife’s edge. The move on Tuesday comes after hours of whiplash in the Israel-Hamas war, with the militant group on Monday saying it accepted an Egyptian-Qatari mediated cease-fire proposal. Israel, meanwhile, insisted the deal did not meet its core demands. The high-stakes diplomatic moves and military brinkmanship left a glimmer of hope alive — but only barely — for an accord that could bring at least a pause in the seven-month-old war that has devastated the Gaza Strip.

Asian markets are mostly higher, although Chinese shares faltered. U.S. futures and oil prices edged higher. On Monday, U.S. stocks added to their gains from last week as technology stocks led the way once again. The S&P 500 climbed 1% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.5%. The Nasdaq composite added 1.2%. Treasury yields held steady in the bond market following last week's big moves on hopes that a cooling job market could get the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates this year. Berkshire Hathaway rose after Warren Buffett’s company reported its latest quarterly results over the weekend. The Walt Disney Co. and Uber Technologies will also report their earnings later this week.

The Olympic torch will finally enter France. It's due to reach the southern seaport of Marseille on Wednesday and already, it has been quite a journey. After being lit by the sun’s rays on April 16 in Ancient Olympia, it was carried around Greece before leaving Athens late last month aboard a three-mast ship named Belem, headed for Marseille. Once it leaves Marseille, a vast relay route will be undertaken before the torch's odyssey ends on July 27 in Paris. Some notable stops include the stunning island of Mont-Saint-Michel. There's a jaunt through France’s overseas territories and a sweep up the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc mountain pass.

Boeing has called off its first astronaut launch because of a fluttering rocket valve. The two NASA test pilots had just strapped into Boeing's Starliner capsule when the countdown was halted Monday night, two hours before the planned liftoff from Cape Canaveral, Florida. United Launch Alliance's CEO says the problem involves an oxygen pressure-relief valve on the Atlas rocket's upper stage. Liftoff is now off until at least Friday. If the valve needs to be replaced, the flight to the International Space Station would bump into next week.
