Asian markets are mostly higher, although Chinese shares faltered. U.S. futures and oil prices edged higher. On Monday, U.S. stocks added to their gains from last week as technology stocks led the way once again. The S&P 500 climbed 1% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.5%. The Nasdaq composite added 1.2%. Treasury yields held steady in the bond market following last week's big moves on hopes that a cooling job market could get the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates this year. Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s visit to European ally Serbia on Tuesday falls on a symbolic date: the 25th anniversary of the bombing of the Chinese Embassy during NATO’s air war over Kosovo. U.S. jets dropped five bombs on the Chinese Embassy compound in Belgrade on May 7, 1999, setting it ablaze and killing three Chinese nationals. Twenty other people were injured in the incident, which has burdened relations between the two powers ever since. The Western military alliance had launched the air war in March that year to force then Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic to end a brutal onslaught against ethnic Albanian rebels in Kosovo.
Powerful storms have erupted in the central United States, bringing tornadoes to rural Oklahoma and large hail in parts of Kansas. Forecasters are warning that the storms could stretch into the early hours of Tuesday. Tornadoes were spotted skirting northern Oklahoma, including one that caused extensive damage north of Tulsa in the small town of Barnsdall. The Osage County sheriff says there are no confirmed deaths. Homes were destroyed and trees and power lines were toppled by the tornado. In Kansas, some areas were pelted by apple-sized hail. The severe weather follows heavy rainfall in Houston, where floodwaters began to recede Monday.
