A tennis player has been awarded $9 million in damages by a jury in federal court in Florida after accusing the U.S. Tennis Association of failing to protect her from a coach she said sexually abused her at one of its training centers when she was 19. The lawsuit filed by Kylie McKenzie in March 2022 said Anibal Aranda, who was employed by the sport’s national governing body for about seven years and later fired, used his position as a USTA coach to get access to vulnerable female athletes and commit sexual battery against them. McKenzie said she feels validated by the outcome of the case. The USTA said it would appeal.

Two WNBA players were among a dozen Americans who opted to play in Russia this past offseason following Brittney Griner’s incarceration in 2022. Kayla Thornton of the New York Liberty and Monique Billings of the Los Angeles Sparks played for Dynamo Kursk. There were other former WNBA players in the Russian league including Megan Walker and Bria Holmes. WNBA players routinely play in international leagues during the offseason to supplement their league salaries. Russia has one of the highest-paying leagues and was the favored destination for top players like Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart and Griner. It’s lost its favored status following Griner’s arrest and 10-month imprisonment, as well as Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine.

The United Nations chief is appealing to Israel and Hamas to reach a cease-fire agreement, warning that this is a decisive moment for the region.

Witness testimony in Donald Trump's hush money trial is moving forward again and all eyes are on who will be called next. Porn actor Stormy Daniels was called to the witness stand mid-morning Tuesday and is expected to testify about her alleged sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. Monday's testimony saw two witnesses tied to the Trump Organization elaborate on a key part of the charges in the case: Michael Cohen's reimbursement for hush money payments. Trump was also fined for again violating his gag order. Prosecutors say Trump and his associates schemed to influence the 2016 presidential election by buying and burying negative stories about Trump. He has pleaded not guilty.

Police in riot gear blocked access to the University of Chicago’s Quad early Tuesday. President Paul Alivisatos acknowledged the school’s role as a protector of freedom of speech but his message to the university community also took on an enough-is-enough stance. Just over 2,600 people have been arrested on the campuses of 50 colleges and universities since April 18, according to figures based on AP reporting and statements from universities and law enforcement agencies. Not all schools are taking such an approach. The president at Wesleyan University has commended the on-campus demonstration as an act of political expression.

Porn actor Stormy Daniels has testified at Donald Trump’s New York hush money trial about a sexual encounter she says they had in 2006 that resulted in her being paid off to keep silent during the presidential election a decade later. Daniels’ testimony Tuesday included a detailed and at times graphic accounting of an encounter Trump has denied. Daniels’ testimony is central to the case because in the final weeks of Trump’s 2016 Republican presidential campaign, his lawyer Michael Cohen paid her $130,000 to keep quiet. Trump is charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection with the hush money payments. The former president has pleaded not guilty.

Holocaust survivors are participating in a digital campaign called #CancelHate which features videos of them reading Holocaust denial posts from different social media platforms. The campaign was launched Thursday by the New York-based Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany. Each post illustrates how denial and distortion can not only rewrite history but perpetuates antisemitic tropes and spreads hate. In the videos, the survivors juxtapose the hate post with their personal stories of persecution during the Holocaust. The campaign comes at a time when antisemitic incidents, triggered by Hamas’ attack on Israel on Oct. 7 and the following war, have increased from Europe to the U.S. and beyond, to levels not seen in decades.

Several of the area’s state and federal representatives Tuesday joined more than half of all U.S. governors in calling to repel Syrian refugees after the ISIS-backed attacks in Paris.
