Is there a more trite and hackneyed phrase in the tax debate than “fair share”? Progressives, who have a never-ending appetite for spending other people’s money, rarely get specific when they argue for higher levies on the “rich.”

A third panel of potential jurors is set to be questioned in Donald Trump’s hush money case, drawing jury selection a step closer to completion in the first criminal trial of a former U.S. president. After a jury of 12 New Yorkers was seated Thursday, lawyers are now expected to turn their attention to picking remaining alternates who can vow to set aside their personal views and impartially judge the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. Thursday’s court proceedings demonstrated the unpredictability in the jury selection process in a high-profile case such as this one. Two jurors who had been seated a day earlier were dismissed from the panel.

A jury of 12 people has been seated in former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial in New York. Alternates are now being selected. The rapid progress Thursday afternoon propels the case closer to opening statements and weeks of testimony in a case charging the Republican with falsifying business records to suppress stories about his sex life in the final days of the 2016 election. The jury includes a sales professional, a software engineer, an English teacher and multiple lawyers. The case centers on $130,000 Trump’s lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen paid to porn actor Stormy Daniels. Trump faces 34 felony counts. He denies any wrongdoing.

Let no one say “Suffs” lacks timing. Shaina Taub's buzzy musical about the women's suffrage movement first played off-Broadway in 2022, a run that coincided with news the Supreme Court was planning to overturn Roe vs. Wade, sparking a palpable sense of urgency in the audience. Now, a revised version of the show opens on Broadway this week, months before the U.S. election. It has two high-profile producers on board: Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai. Clinton tells The Associated Press that the show helps fill a huge gap in public knowledge about the suffrage movement, and hopes it will have an educational impact similar to “Hamilton.”

New York police have disbanded a pro-Palestinian protest encampment at Columbia University and arrested more than 100 protesters, including the daughter of a prominent Minnesota congresswoman. Several student demonstrators said they also were suspended from Columbia and Barnard College, including Isra Hirsi — the daughter of Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar. The congresswoman had questioned Columbia’s president Wednesday about the school’s targeting of pro-Palestinian protesters. Police said 108 people, including Omar's daughter, were charged with trespassing. Two people were also charged with obstructing government administration. New York Mayor Eric Adams said the city was asked by university officials to remove the protesters opposed to Israeli military action in Gaza.

Several of the area’s state and federal representatives Tuesday joined more than half of all U.S. governors in calling to repel Syrian refugees after the ISIS-backed attacks in Paris.
